"The Naga Buddha”
a documentary by Natalie Coletta, Associate Professor of Art History
In March 07, during her sabbatical release, our resident art historian, Natalie Coletta, traveled to Cambodia to conduct study of the Southeast Asian Buddha seated on the seven-headed coiled serpent called the Naga. Most remaining sculptures from ancient Cambodia are in fragments, emblematic of a culture struggling to piece itself together. In this film short, Coletta takes a look at current Cambodia and its antiquity--inspired by the position of Buddha seated on the snake. The result is a 25-minute visual analysis of stillness and movement that she captured in Cambodia's temples, culture and street life.

The Cambodian Coordinating Council (Cam-CC) is organizing two events for the coming Cambodian New Year Celebration, “Year of the Rat”, 2553 BE. On April 6, 2008, the New Year Parade will proceed on Anaheim Street (starting at the corner of Junipero Avenue), following an interfaith ceremony that will begin at 9:30 am. The parade will end at MacArthur Park, 1321 East Anaheim Street, where a multicultural celebration will be held from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

In 2005, the community started the New Year Parade along Anaheim Street, which is in the “heart” of the Cambodian community now known as Cambodia Town, the largest Cambodian community in the United States. The Fourth Annual New Year Parade is an exciting, fun-filled event which will showcase unique and colorful floats, traditional and modern Cambodian dancers, musicians, pedicabs, cyclos, and oxcarts. It is expected to be even more spectacular than last year’s parade, with over 100 parade entrants and 15,000 visitors coming from all over the United States and Cambodia. This year’s parade theme is “Cambodia Town for Diversity”, in recognition of the unifying power that the Parade has among people of all backgrounds and ethnicities. The festival in MacArthur Park following the parade will showcase traditional and modern Cambodian dances, music, and songs. Local vendors will provide exquisite combinations of cultural food, clothing and crafts, and merchandise. The parade and festival are free to the public and have something for the whole family!

LONG BEACH, CA

On April 12, the New Year Celebration, a community-wide festival expected to draw tens of thousands of participants, will take place at El Dorado Regional Park, Area III, located at 7550 East Spring Street, Long Beach. One of the biggest celebrations in the Cambodian culture is the coming of the New Year. This three-day celebration traditionally takes place in April. This year, the celebration falls on April 14, 15, and 16, as calculated by Cambodian astronomers called Horas. Cambodians in Long Beach have joined together and celebrated the New Year on this weekend since the early 90's. The New Year Celebration at El Dorado Park is an all day event which includes religious ceremonies, Khmer traditional games, activities for kids, face painting, various stage performances, cultural food, and a live band with famous Khmer singers performing throughout the day. Admission tickets are $20 per vehicle if purchased in advance. Tickets will be available at a number of Cambodian businesses throughout Long Beach, including La Lune Restaurant, Mary’s Video, and Kirirom Jewelry. On the day of the event, tickets must be purchased at La Lune Restaurant or the El Dorado Public Library Parking Lot at 2900 North Studebaker Road, at $30 per vehicle. Tickets will not be sold at the park. The New Year Celebration is a time for joy, unity and friendship among the entire community. Cam-CC wishes everyone good health and longevity for the coming year, as the angels bring peace, happiness, and prosperity to all of us.

ELEPHANT WALK COOKING CLASSES

Longteine "Nyep" de Monteiro, The Elephant Walk's founding chef and author of The Elephant Walk Cookbook, teaches classes at The Elephant Walk in Cambridge, with occasional exceptions. The classes generally run on Saturdays, begin at 10:30 a.m., generally last for about 3 hours, and include a light lunch. The cost is $69 per person.

Nyep's Cooking Class schedule for April-June 2008:

April 12 - "Cambodian New Year"
Inspired by the many new adoptive parents of Cambodian children who have taken Nyep’s classes in the past, seeking a deeper understanding of their children’s native cultural heritage, this very special class will explore the culture and traditions of Cambodian New Year (celebrated every April 13th, 14th, and 15th) including New Year’s food and games! ~ Get ready to roll up your sleeves and learn how to work with sticky rice!

April 19 - "Light Cambodian Curries"
Cambodian culture and cuisine has its distant roots in India – world-famous for its curries. Well, it should be no surprise then that Cambodians have some delicious curries of their own. - In this class you’ll learn a lot about lighter curries, where they come from, and how they are made. Although you can buy something called “curry powder” in the supermarket, curries are actually complex blends of herbs and spices that are fun to make, full-flavored, delicious and satisfying. Time to unravel the mystery that is curry and learn to make them yourself!

May 3 - "Freshwater Fish and Shellfish"
Yes, Cambodia has lots of ocean frontage on the Gulf of Thailand, but the “seafood” most prized by Khmer’s comes from their rivers – including the Mekong - and the great lake Tonle Sap. Both fish sauce and the quintessentially Khmer prahok [preserved featherback fish] are extremely salty, so brininess can’t be considered a serious difference maker. What is? Sorry, you’re going to have to take this class for that answer! But we will let you in on one secret: Nyep LOVES Cambodia’s giant freshwater prawns…

May 17 - “Vegetarian & Vegan Cambodian Cooking”
Cambodian cooking is a versatile, vegetarian delight. In this class Nyep will share some very healthy, tasty vegetarian and vegan recipes that are at once exotic and yet simple enough to include in your everyday repertoire.

June 7 - "Quick and Healthy Stirfries"
Delicious, light and healthy dishes that you can prepare quickly are the “Holy Grail” for the modern cook. The good news is that Nyep’s personal taste and instincts tend that direction too. Join her for this class in which she will share her thoughts on stocking a pantry with speed, flavor and nutrition in mind, and some Cambodian stir-fries that make good use of those ingredients.

June 14 - "Doing It All on Market Day"
This popular class has become legend—a genuine adventure, an improvisational all-day journey for those who want to immerse themselves in Southeast Asian culinary culture. A chauffeur-driven mini-bus will transport you with Nyep to pan-Asian and Cambodian markets where Nyep will de-mystify all those obscure ingredients for you, while also helping you to judge quality and freshness. You’ll purchase the day’s choicest meat, seafood, and produce and then return to Nyep’s home where you will prepare together, using your purchases, a sumptuous meal to share. – This is an all-day class with a special price: $145 per person. The cooking portion of the class will take place at Nyep's Jamaica Plain home.

June 28 - "Grilling, Cambodian and French-Style"
Time to jump start your summer! - As you know, The Elephant Walk serves both French and Cambodian cuisine. With such a strong (and deliciously understandable!) emphasis on traditional American barbecue in this country, what you may NOT know is that both the French and Cambodians do a lot of grilling too. Outdoor grilling lends itself to great social and family gatherings. With summer well under way, come learn some surprising new, delicious ethnic recipes and techniques to add to your repertoire for “Grilling Season 2008!” - This class will be co-taught by chefs Gérard Lopez and Longteine "Nyep" de Monteiro.

SPECIAL FEATURE: GUESTS WELCOME! To celebrate the social aspect of outdoor grilling, each student is encouraged to invite one guest to join them at 1:00 p.m., as the “business” portion of the class is winding down. Then, as the newly-trained, multi-ethnic pit-masters show off their new skills, together the group will share the wealth of delicious dishes prepared in class, accompanied by some fresh summer salads. - This class will take place at Nyep's Jamaica Plain home. It will run from 10:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. to be followed by lunch. In case of rain on June 28th, the class will be postponed until Sunday, June 29th. The cost is $79.

Contact Chef Nadsa de Monteiro directly via email classes@elephantwalk.com or telephone at 617.285.1056 with all your questions.
