FAMCAM Culture Classes
Where: Beverly, MA When: First Saturday of the month from Februrary to June, 2004 What Your Children Will Learn These age-appropriate classes cover language, cultural customs, music, dance, and other activities. For example, younger children may learn to count to ten in Khmer, while older children may learn to read and write Khmer script. Children will also learn songs and dances, both contemporary and traditional. The instructor will provide context for cultural customs from the past to the present. There will also be lots of fun, including games, arts & crafts projects, snacks, and free/social play time. Emilys Books and Taansooa will have Cambodian books and items available for sale at the first session. Vanntha (J.J) Thou, Instructor JJ was born in Cambodia and escaped the Khmer Rouge in 1980, living in a Thai refugee camp where he attended school to learn how to read and write Cambodian. When JJ and his family arrived in the United States in 1985, he had the opportunity to learn traditional Cambodian dance. JJ has performed at Cambodian New Year and other events for several years. He has dedicated himself to teaching the next generation of Cambodians living in America their cultural heritage. After attending college in Minnesota, JJ moved to Lynn, MA, where he teaches Cambodian dance to young people. His students perform at many schools, churches, and Cambodian New Year celebrations. JJ taught a Cambodian culture class at the 2003 FAMCAM Water Festival in Lowell, MA. He works as an architectural designer and has a three-year old daughter named Amara Sopheary Thou. 7, 2004 Schedule The cost is $60 per child for all five classes. Second child is $40 for all five classes. Tuition includes the cost of instruction, facility rental, snack and arts/crafts supplies. To
